Community Spirit

One of the best things about being the MP for Aberconwy is the opportunity offered to witness at first hand the work of volunteers in numerous organisations and the difference they make to community cohesion.

The last few weeks have highlighted to me how strong the volunteer spirit is in all parts of the constituency. I’ll offer three examples. Llandudno is a well looked after town which has been maintained to a standard that most traditional seaside resorts have failed to emulate. There are many reasons for this but there is little doubt that the Llandudno in Bloom effort, an annual commitment by hundreds of people to simply make the town look pretty, has been a significant contributor. The hard work and unflinching dedication of so many volunteers has once again been rewarded with a ‘Gold’ award and we should all applaud the efforts of all involved. The recognition is well deserved but the difference made all-year is what really counts – thank you.

I have previously commented upon the enthuthiastic work of our various churches and the difference they make to community cohesion. I was impressed on Wednesday by a fascinating exhibition at Emmanuel Church in Llandudno. Emmanuel has a lively congregation with an open door policy and last week they had an exhibition attempting to place many of the Bible stories in context which included a rather impressive model of the second temple in Jerusalem. The exhibition had been well attended and shows how the work of volunteers can provide inspiration and enjoyment for local people and visitors alike.

Finally, I was impressed at the response from local businesses and people to the latest flooding of the Grade 1 listed gardens at Gwydir Castle. This is an on-going and somewhat depressing situation where an incredibly important part of the history and culture of the Conwy Valley is slowly being destroyed due to a lack of care from the authorities who, in correctly dealing with the flooding threat to Llanrwst and Trefriw, have left Gwydir at the mercy of each and every major rainfall. However, the latest distressing flood highlighted to the owners of Gwydir that they have the support of the local community with businesses donating sand and locals donating their labour in order to help fill sandbags to protect what is left of the gardens. If you want to help in any way I’m sure Judy and Peter would be delighted to hear from you on 01492 641687.

New Term

Have you started University or waved goodbye to a son or daughter as they embark on a new and valuable experience? It happened to me for the second time last week and whilst proud of the achievements of our children I’m sure I’m not the only one affected by the empty bedroom or empty chair at the dinner table. Time stands still for no one! If you are a new student or a proud parent be aware that sometimes things can go wrong. A student loan might be late or a maintenance grant refused. As always, if you are experiencing difficulties by all means contact me and my office – we can often help! 01492 583094.

Ysbryd Cymunedol

Un o’r pethau gorau am fod yn AS dros Aberconwy yw’r cyfle i weld, gyda fy llygaid fy hun, y gwaith mae gwirfoddolwyr yn ei wneud mewn sawl sefydliad a’r gwahaniaeth maen nhw’n ei wneud i gydlyniant cymunedol.

Mae’r ychydig wythnosau diwethaf wedi pwysleisio i mi pa mor gadarn yw’r ysbryd gwirfoddoli ym mhob rhan o’r etholaeth. Dyma dair enghraifft i chi. Mae Llandudno yn dref heb ei hail sy’n cael ei chynnal a’i chadw i safon na all y rhan fwyaf o drefi glan y môr traddodiadol ei hefelychu. Mae sawl rheswm dros hyn, ond mae digwyddiad Llandudno yn ei Blodau, sy'n ymrwymiad blynyddol gan gannoedd o bobl i wneud i’r dref edrych yn brydferth, wedi cyfrannu’n sylweddol at hyn. Mae gwaith caled ac ymroddiad diflino yr holl wirfoddolwyr wedi dwyn ffrwyth unwaith eto wrth i’r dref ennill y wobr ‘Aur’. Llongyfarchiadau i bawb dan sylw am eu holl ymdrechion. Rydych chi’n haeddu’r gydnabyddiaeth ond mae’r gwahaniaeth rydych chi’n ei wneud drwy gydol y flwyddyn yr un mor bwysig - diolch i chi.

Rydw i wedi sôn o’r blaen am waith brwdfrydig ein heglwysi amrywiol a’r gwahaniaeth maen nhw’n ei wneud i gydlyniant cymunedol. Cefais fy syfrdanu ddydd Mercher gan arddangosfa anhygoel yn Eglwys Emmanuel yn Llandudno. Mae gan Emmanuel gynulleidfa fywiog a pholisi drws agored. Yr wythnos diwethaf trefnwyd arddangosfa i geisio rhoi rhai o straeon y Beibl yn eu cyd-destun ac roedd hyn yn cynnwys model arbennig o’r ail deml yn Jerwsalem. Daeth llawer o bobl i’r arddangosfa ac mae’n profi bod gwaith gwirfoddolwyr yn gallu difyrru ac ysbrydoli pobl leol ac ymwelwyr fel ei gilydd.

Yn olaf, fe wnaeth ymateb busnesau a phobl leol i’r llifogydd diweddaraf yng ngerddi rhestredig Gradd 1 Castell Gwydir greu argraff fawr arnaf i. Mae'r sefyllfa hon yn dorcalonnus a pharhaus. Mae rhan hynod bwysig o hanes a diwylliant Dyffryn Conwy yn cael ei dinistrio’n araf o ganlyniad i ddiffyg gofal gan yr awdurdodau. Wrth ddelio’n briodol â’r bygythiad o lifogydd yn Llanrwst a Threfriw, maent wedi gadael Gwydir yn ddidostur i wynebu pob glawiad trwm posibl. Fodd bynnag, dangosodd y llifogydd difrifol diweddaraf i berchenogion Gwydir fod ganddynt gefnogaeth y gymuned leol oherwydd gwelwyd busnesau’n rhoi tywod at yr achos a phobl leol yn rhoi eu llafur er mwyn helpu i lenwi bagiau tywod i amddiffyn beth sy’n weddill o’r gerddi. Os hoffech helpu mewn unrhyw ffordd rydw i’n siŵr y bydd Judy a Peter wrth eu bodd yn clywed gennych chi ar 01492 641687.

Tymor Newydd

Ydych chi wedi dechrau yn y Brifysgol neu wedi ffarwelio â’ch mab neu’ch merch wrth iddynt ddechrau ar brofiad newydd a gwerth chweil? Digwyddodd hyn i mi am yr eildro yr wythnos diwethaf ac er ein bod ni’n falch o gyflawniadau ein plant, rwy’n siŵr bod gweld llofft wag neu gadair wag wrth y bwrdd bwyd wedi effeithio ar lawer ohonoch chi - nid dim ond fi. I ble'r aeth yr amser? Os ydych chi’n fyfyriwr newydd neu’n rhiant balch, cofiwch fod pethau’n gallu mynd o chwith weithiau. Gall benthyciad myfyrwyr fod yn hwyr neu gellir gwrthod grant cynhaliaeth. Fel sy’n wir bob tro, mae croeso i chi gysylltu â fi neu â’m swyddfa os ydych chi’n cael trafferth - gallwn ni helpu yn aml! 01492 583094.
