The United Kingdom has taken a global lead in marine conservation with its “Blue Belt” policy, planning to conserve nearly four million square kilometres of natural ocean habitat by 2020 and creating vast marine reserves around Ascension Island, St. Helena, the Chagos archipelago, Pitcairn and Tristan da Cunha.
